Recercar #76 / Franciscus Bossinensis

Standard

It’s a nice, little Recercar. And, there’s nothing much more to say about it. Well, it’s the first piece by Bossinensis I’ve played and the first I recorded, not sure how I feel about him yet, will play more pieces from him in time.

Also, I’ve decided to move for a two week publishing schedule, I want to focus more on my project and less on videos. So click the follow button, and you can also follow me on Twitter, FaceBook and Instagram.

It’s hard to say goodbye

Standard

for the past two decades I’ve been using Lilypond to engrave everything music related. With the help of the community I’ve created templates for 10 course lute so I’ll spend less time creating the framework and just write the music.

If you don’t know Lilypond, it is one of the most advanced music engraving tool out there, and it’s open source. I won’t get into much details about it, you can read it all in the website. But Lilypond, advanced as it is also have many issue, most, if not all can be solved using the great discussion groups. There are a lot of option, for me, too many options. I couldn’t tweak my framework to the degree I wanted, some tweaks are not possible (for my knowledge) and some takes too many resources.

Unlike most other softwares out there, Lilypond is using text to produce the output, it’s more like programming then music writing and for me it takes longer to write some types of compositions. Also, as I write this, there is no support to export Lilypond to MusicXML, which means, sharing between supported applications like MuseScore, Finale and Sibelius.

Another issue with Lilypond is the MacOS support. There is a support, kind of, but it’s unofficial, so it can stop at any day for no reason whatsoever. The last package for 64 bit is Lilypond 2.22 from 2020 while the official stable release is 2.22.2, you can use HomeBrew or MacPorts to get the latest versions but it depends on the maintainers.

The solution for my problems came from a lute discussion group and it’s called MuseScore. Unlike Lilypond it has a point and click paradigm, which I’m not used to, but the results are instant. I can see right away and I don’t have to compile the file to see the result. In the first hour I managed to create a framework for 10 course lute, although with only treble staff and I will have to get used to point and click again, but I like it. Getting used to a new software is not an easy task, but I need to get better results and for now, MuseScore is the best option.

So this is it Lilypond, I’m sorry ,but it doesn’t work anymore between us. We had some good time together, but it’s time to move on.

Packington’s Pound / Anonymous

Standard

In retrospective, perhaps a faster tempo. But what is done cannot be undone, unless I record it again 😛 Lute by James Marriage (2006) after Hans Frei

Also, I’m thinking of switching to twice-a-month upload schedule for better time management, it’s quite hard for me to  move between working on the album, recording for YouTube, and keep my mental health in check. On one hand, recoding to YouTube makes me really happy, on the other it also takes a lot of time and effort. I haven’t made a final decision yet, so your opinion matters.

Canon in D / Johann Pachelbel

Standard

I found this arrangement by Nicola Mandorino few years ago, it’s pretty simple but it made this piece perfect on guitar. I’m sure there are other arrangements, and I can probably write my own, but there’s no reason. If you’re looking to play this piece, look for this specific one. Unless, of course, you’re looking for something more specific.

Now, I’m really sorry about the low volume, I haven’t noticed it only after I uploaded. This is still with the old gear but, no longer in the bedroom 🙂

So have fun, leave a comment, subscribe, and all these good stuff. More music is coming, a lot more! Also, if you’re looking for this arrangement and can’t find it, just send me a message and I’ll help you.

P.S.

You can see the Beethoven in the background? You can buy it in my store!

Minuet in G Major / J.S. Bach

Standard

So I’m back, and with me are the uploads. This week, the timeless Minuet in G Major but the one and only J.S. Bach .

Not an easy piece, but not so hard. I also believe this is the last recording from the bedroom and builtin microphone. Oh, this is also my own arrangement, but I don’t believe it’s any different from other arrangements out there.

Have Fun!

Minuet in A Major / Omer Katzir

Standard

Ok, so the first thing you can see, I’m out of the bedroom, there’s actually one more video recorded in the bedroom, it was actually recorded before this one but will be released only in September when I come back from my vacation.

Second, you can hear the poor sound, it’s due to the poor conditions I have, since I recorded this, already made more improvements. The final improvements will be when I’ll get the new microphones, so getting better with what I have is also good.

Finally, about the Minuet itself, there’s nothing much to say, its very simple and happy one. I had fun writing it in major after the minor one and they can be played together.

Enjoy and please

Engraving – David Bowie

Standard

Weekly therapy and it was goooood! Not only the result, but the process itself. Took me about two hours. Also, it’s not a pledge option for the Headstart project, why? Because I think there are enough options for now. If you want your own Bowie, you can still support the project by selecting the right option and ask for David Bowie.

A Toy No. 3 / Omer Katzir

Standard

Another small and fun little toy, as you can see, still recording using the builtin microphone. But the cables are here, everything is almost working perfectly, there are still few more little things to fix, so stay tuned.
